Just a quickie update as it's been awhile since I've blogged. (what were you thinking this was about?!)
I'm still updating the 'look'...but I have to say...I'm doing great! I've lost a bunch of weight, my hair is shorter and lighter (something my booking agent has been on me about!), and things are just about where I want them for my headshots reshoot. Hey...these things take time.
In the meantime...I continue my quest to bring things into my life that rock...so far so good! :)
My latest note from the Universe:
Any attempt to measure one's progress in life with an assessment of their present physical surroundings, or even a panoramic glance at their life and times to date, is just plain "whacked." The reason being, Maggie, is that each journey, kind of like a haircut, should never be fully appraised until it's complete. Otherwise, one might mistaken a miracle-in-the-making for a setback, loss, or the "wet-look."
Your cosmic barber and de-whacker, The Universe
Seriously...LOVE IT! :)

Gemini...through and through!

So as much as I LOVE being Gemini...my bitter sweet relationship with 'change' can really put a wrench in my plans sometimes! As I recently blogged, I've been in the process of changing my look...AGAIN! Seriously...I do this!
In this particular case, as an actress, it's really necessary to keep my headshots up-to-date. What does that mean, you ask? How about forking out the dough to reshoot with my 'Dream Team'...and I just shot my last set in May!
Oh well...it is what it is. Me and boredom...we don't get along AT ALL! So if it costs me a few bucks to keep things fresh and keep me happy then so be it! I'm not one to live in a rut in any aspect of my life...seriously.
Anyway, getting ready to do my reshoot soon and then off to print...AGAIN!
BTW...today's Note from the Universe...kinda cool, kinda cool.
I can assure you, Maggie, that the time will come when you, too, will ask, "In what fields did I sow seeds to deserve so very, very much?" Then I'll remind you that the whole sowing-seeds-cause-and-effect concept was just a myth, because you were born deserving.

Seriously...this ROCKS!
This is AWESOME! I just submitted for a very groovy project in which the concept is very near and dear to me... I can't talk about it just yet, but if you could just cross everything you have two of (even if it hurts) and chant, "Ohmmmmmmm, Maggie...you little Rock Star" over and over again that should do the trick! Yep - that should do it! :) 1-2-3...GO!
Today's Note from the Universe:
No matter how things appear, Maggie; no matter what you've overheard; and no matter how many people think otherwise... nothing can stop you, no one can hurt you, and you and I still have forever and ever.
Whoooohoooooooo!! The Universe
Ommmmmmmmmm, Universe...you little Rock Star!

To Train or Not To Train...

If there's one thing ANYONE in the biz recommends, it's TRAINING TRAINING TRAINING!!! Look this is a business where the 'on-going education' thing is HUGE! (as it is in several industries).
Hooked myself up with an actor's workshop and it's been great. The focus is on-camera auditioning (VERY different from Theatrical auditioning). Anyone who knows me, knows that I'm very animated and 'on purpose' but I'm being reminded that for on-camera auditions, I need to keep my character a little closer to me and project 'her' through smaller actions and through face -vs- projecting through exaggerated actions and face.
I've taken these several times before, but it's been a while so this is good...really good!
So for your actors out there... keep yourselves 'in the know' and TRAIN! You rock at your craft... it's good to learn new techniques to incorporate with your own.
Okay - peace out from this little corner of the world!

Saved by a Tweet!
I had another audition...this one in San Diego. Frankly...it was not good. Listen...realizing your own reality is the ONLY way to succeed! If you know you rocked, be proud of it. If you know you sucked...do something about it!
I reached out to someone that I follow on Twitter and received INVALUABLE information and help. Here's the conversation:
Me: (over 2 tweets) When @ audition with cd (I accidently typed cA...slip of the finger) how much performance space is camera giving? Tight or wide? Can I stand up and get more animated? I always feel this need to work within a small space and it inhibits a LOT!
@stgactor: (over 4 tweets) I always prefer actors stand up.U keep your power that way. Ask the cd what your latitude is. R they forcing u to stay seated? Learn to work small but b effective. Have u taken an on camera cold reading class? Highly recommend Margie Haber. If 2 expensive I have another less expensive alternative. The difference between theatre & film/tv training is enormous. Working while still doesn't mean less power or emotion. It just means compacting yourself but still expressing from the heart.
Me: Thank you sir! Invaluable and appreciated info. You're the best! :) I'll be attending orientation with Margie Haber. My recent audition wasn't good, 2 B frank, b/c I felt so 'caged'. Thanks again!
@stgactor: good. tell her you're a referral. our peeps get a discount.
Me: Will do...thanks again. xo
So a SPECIAL shout out to Mr. Phil Brock of STG for offering his invaluable expertise...I am grateful for it!

Yesterday's audition...
So I went up to LA for an audition for a feature film yesterday. My first thought was to audition as I usually do...not over-think the character, don't worry about the 'action' in the scene, just get in there and play it strong and face-to-face. With this particular character though...I did things a little differently.
The character is faith-based, nurturing, the glue holding together a crumbling marriage while standing behind her two kids. I felt it really necessary to play the scene to SHOW the nurturing side of her by putting her child to bed, by helping her oldest child through a dilemma while making lunch, by avoiding eye contact with the her husband (her way of keeping her strength without losing it completely) until the bickering hit a certain point in which she grabbed her 'Cross' necklace (I never wear ANY bling to an audition by the way) for strength and confronting her husband. Again, typically one should play face-to-face and strong...could be my demise, but she was necessary to 'show' as well.
I don't know how it played on camera...I know what I was trying to convey, I just really hope it came through. Took a risk...I like risks, even if they don't pan out. I put myself through the ringer when I'm safe (don't get me wrong...some days I DO play it safe) but I ALWAYS do the 'what if' when I do.
Anyway...it was a great experience.
So wish me luck! It shoots 9/21 - 10/03...I'll keep you posted. :)

It's been a while!
Long time - no blog! I've actually been really busy...but with my regular job. Hey, a girl's gotta make a living in the interim!
So I've changed my look a bit...per a casting director I work with often. She suggested some great options...and I did them. I just shot my headshots on May 12th, but that's okay...I'm Gemini, so I'm all about change! :)
So, I'm currently booking with my 'dream team' for my new headshots and then I'm good to go! Stand by for updates and thanks again for your support!

More baby steps...

You should know by now that I believe 'baby steps = big outcomes'.
Well I completed my open call submission for Mad Men...crossing 'em! Hey, it's a long shot but you don't finish anything unless you start...right? Anyway, I squeezed it in at deadline with the intention that it wouldn't get lost in the shuffle, rather it would be among the most recent sent in and, therefore, seen. LOL - yes, my mind thinks like that!
My latest Note from the Universe - you can see why I truly believe:
"Yes, Maggie, you can have whatever you want. ANYTHING you can imagine. You name it. It's yours. Done deal. Zip, zap. Bing, bong. Ka-pow. Oh, but you have to go get it. K?

Filmaka Audition

Well I just got home from my audition in Los Angeles. I think it went well...the casting agents at Filmaka were awesome! Very user-friendly...I love that! It was an audition for DirecTV...cross 'em!
I was contacted over the weekend for this via my Actors Access website - good to know it's working for me. :)
When I spoke with them over the weekend, I gave them my email address to send me breakdown and script. Somehow they emailed another person who was contacted to audition as well, but I get his email! I forwarded it to him and realized it was Sebastian Siegel and if you don't know him his picture is posted for today's blog! He has done such projects as Lost, The Family that Preys, Passions and SO MUCH MORE! He's pretty established in the industry! So when I saw that, I knew I had to make this audition...if they were considering me, that was AWESOME!
Anyway, I'll keep you posted on the final verdict!

The Fugitive Chronicles
Sat, 8/01: I had a great day on set shooting The Fugitive Chronicles, a new show for A & E. I met some wonderful people (actors and crew) and really enjoyed working under Director, Ben Chanan!
I can't blog details about the show but will definately blog show premiere and air dates! Here are some great actors to look for: Michael Torpey, Julianne Dowler-Shook, Reed Willard, Dianne Gray and Lauren Holiday. I LOVED working with them!
Stay tuned for show information coming soon!

Audition Today - Yes or No?
Friday, 7/31: So I have an audition in Hollywood today but I'm still soul-searching whether to go or not. Why? Because when they told me that I'd have to pay for my reel, I got a little suspicious. Anyway, still working through it and I have my monologue down (without over thinking it) so I'm good to go should I decide to.
Stand by for the final verdict...
Sunday, 8/02: Final verdict is NO. I realized what the situation was and decided not to put myself in it. It didn't feel right...period.

Just got the call...
...I got the part! It's small, but it's MINE!!! Woo-Hoo!!!
This is great to add to my resume and HOPEFULLY will make me SAG eligible...cross 'em! I'm this close!
Anyway, just wanted to share the great news. They start shooting 7/30 - 8/09 and my shoot date is in there somewhere. :) My booking agent will give the details later.
Thrilled to pieces, Maggie

July 25th - Audition Day
Well it's audition day and I feel pretty good. I've tried not to over think it too much...that's ALWAYS a killer!
When I got to the audition, there were several others there waiting to audition as well. It wasn't an open call but I knew several people would be sent. The audition was a one-on-one (for some reason I thought it would be a group audition considering what they were looking for). That was fine though. I went in and met the Director, handed him my headshot and resume and he went straight into direction of what he was looking for. I slated and then went into character. My total audition consisted of a 5-minute scene with a lot of action and emotion. The fact that it wasn't a tripod camera audition helped because then I had a lot more mobility with my character...love that! Camera was able to follow and keep up. One-take and I'm pretty confident so cross 'em!
Director: "You nailed it."
Maggie: "Thank you."
Maggie outside: "WOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"
It was definately a FULL DAY today! A breakfast event for my son and then off to my audition, a fab sushi dinner and a great walk with my pug, Gracie.
I'll let you know the final verdict as soon as I hear. I can't speak much of what the audition was for yet, but I'll keep you posted!

Fri, July 24th - Got an Audition!
Tina Real, my booking agent, called me today, Friday 7/24 with an audition for tomorrow, Saturday 7/25 at 2:00 pm and the Director will be there...no pressure or anything! :)
This is awesome...there hasn't been a lot going on here in San Diego (economy) so it's great that Tina thought of me for this and I'm grateful. There aren't going to be sides (scripts) provided, the instruction is to just 'wing it'. Well, to be real honest 'wing it' is my specialty. I have lots of improvisation experience and although I'm fine with sides available and even sides with improv, total improv is my fave! It really allows me to fall into character and play off of the other actor(s). I love it!!!
So wish me luck and I'll let you know how it went. :)

I would PAY for this...it's THAT good!
Okay I'll say it - I was a bit intimidated, but now I'm exhilerated! Here is a tweet that came over by someone that I follow on Twitter who is in the industry:
"Actors: If u didn't know.. now u know. Lots of well respected people on Twitter giving lots of free advice. We do care and are rooting 4 U!"
The advice that is sent out FOR FREE by these very well-connected, well-respected people in the industry is invaluable and greatly appreciated!
BIG kisses and hugs to them all! :)

My Voice Over Gig
I'm really excited about my recent Voice Over gig I landed! The more of these that come through the better...helps to build my resume. I am still in process of uploading VO demos and I think it might be a wise decision to record in a studio for sound quality. I'm not set up very well with equipment yet so I have some feelers out.
Anyway - just thought I'd share my recent news!!! Woo-Hoo!
A great tweet came over by someone that I follow on Twitter who is in the industry. I won't tell you who he is but here is his tweet: "I will study and get ready and someday my chance will come." -Abraham Lincoln
I believe that to my core.

Coming to Hollywood
I was contacted by a casting director via my Actors Access website regarding a show called "Coming to Hollywood" - it's about, ironically, following a few people as they pursue their careers. (Didn't I just recently send this idea to Ryan Seacrest??? Hmmm...)
Anyway, I responded and will keep you posted.
Also, I was contacted via my Voice123 website and was told that I had what it takes to make a great living in the Voice Over business...that's AWESOME! I would love doing VO work on a regular basis. I'm actually in the process of uploading more VO demos onto my website that will include Commercial, Characters, Jingles/Singing so wish me luck!

Futurama...

I submitted my Voice Over Demos for Futurama today. I say Demos because I submitted for both the regular 'Leela' and the recurring 'Mom'...both would be really fun to do! (especially Mom who's a kick in the pants!)
This was a good submission because the casting agent I submitted to ALSO casts for King of the Hill so it's good to get myself in front of him anyway...right? :)
Well, it's a long shot, but I'm hopeful! Stay tuned...

"Be the Ball..." - Day 2
This is "Be the ball..." - Day 2.
The agencies that I am submitting to were personally referred to me by actor friends of mine as well as my booking agent so it's really important that I sign with one of them, as I don't just want any bloke to represent me! (I said 'bloke'...why?) Anyway, I picked up the phone today and started calling agents.
I was able to submit via email to a few which is great because it allows me to send in a few more pictures (different looks) as well as personally connect...personally...this is the big one. I really don't want to get lost in the shuffle (I may get lost anyway, but a girl can try).
So just checking in and letting you know that I'm working on it! Oh, by the way, Lisa Rinna never got back to me...doesn't surprise me though. I was probably one of hundreds of questions she received, but you can't blame a girl for trying! :)
Wish me luck and thank you for your continued support! It's good to know you're there handing me a cup of water as I keep running!

Six Degrees of Separation...really?!
See, I love Twitter because I follow people around and they don't even know I'm their shadow! I learn A LOT!!! lol
One of the fabulous gals I follow is Lisa Rinna. She sent a tweet out today: "now that I'm sitting here in the car do you have any questions for me you'd like to ask?" So I figured, what the hell...I think I will. So I went ahead and sent: "Yes - looking for an agent in LA. I've got the foot, can you suggest a door? xo, Maggie"
So what do you think, peeps? Do you think she'll reply? Let's remember the Kevin Bacon theory, shall we? SIX DEGREES people!!! The only difference is Twitter kind of makes it only ONE DEGREE! lol
Anyway, I'll let you if she answers me or not. I can promise you this...if I DO take Hollywood by the balls and you want a leg up...I'm there for you! Pinky swear.

"Be the ball!"

So I decided to take a Twitter pal's advice: "Be the ball like in Caddyshack!" This, after I was wondering if I should pound pavement and drop my headshots off personally to agencies. So off I went starting at Elegance Agency (my previous agent). It would be nice to be repped by Pam Pahnke again because she is WELL connected and has been in the business forever. Well, unfortunately she wasn't there so I dropped my goods with the receptionist who was rather nice. I don't know, in this economy a lot of agencies aren't signing new talent, rather they're dropping talent since it's slow out there (yes, even this industry is affected by the shitty economy!). Not a lot of gigs are coming through San Diego right now although I'm ready and willing to go up to LA for gigs. I JUST NEED TO GET SIGNED ALREADY!!! I'm getting hits on my actor's websites, but I can't work without representation...a real Catch 22. :(
Now, I realize it take 4-6 weeks for response and it's only been a couple weeks, BUT STILL!!! I'll be hitting a few other agencies throughout the rest of the week so cross 'em!

Oh Universe...how I love Thee
I take comfort in the old adage: "It's just human nature." Why? Because periodically I find myself losing hope, confidence, trust in what I am pursuing...although I do try to shake it off quickly, sometimes it's tough. But then I'm given an important reminder that it doesn't have to be MY human nature to think like this and I have a right to my own happiness doing what I want to do with my life. Oh Universe...how I love Thee.
But Maggie, what if you did have the power, the reach, and the glory? What if you were given dominion over all things? And what if eternity lay before you, brimming with love, friends, and laughter? Yet still, one day, in all your radiance, bubbling over with giddy excitement, you tripped, fell, and got hurt - really hurt. Would you give up on all of your dreams? Would you hate yourself? Would you forget life's magic and promise? Or would you shrug it off, look ahead, and exclaim that it's "just a flesh wound"?
Touché, The Universe

Mixed Emotions Today...
Well I am watching the Michael Jackson Memorial - I wasn't lucky enough to win tickets to honor him in person, but that's okay. I am remembering so many memories that his songs bring to me! It's really great...RIP Michael! :)
I am kind of excited today too though...I got a GREAT email from Actors Access (I'm on both Actors Access and Actors Pages) regarding a skin care ad. Apparently they like my look (and my skin - which, if I don't say so myself, is fab!) and so I'm hoping to get this commercial...cross 'em! :)
I'll keep you posted! I'm sending out more submissions to talent agents today. I sent an email to my long time friend, Jeanna Bonello, who works in the modeling industry in LA regarding agents she would suggest so we'll see what comes of it.

Okay - check back soon for updates!

Thank You and R.I.P.
If I have ever wondered at any time if my choices in life were the right ones, this is certainly a time I am soul-searching that question more than ever before. With the recent loss of David Carradine, Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and the great Michael Jackson all that goes through my mind now is 'thank God they were doing what they loved most in life'.
I used to watch 'Kung Fu' with my grandmother (my lebanese 'Sitto') who LOVED that show! David Carradine is a part of my life's memories with my Sitto. My family used to watch the Johnny Carson show and Ed McMahon is part of my life's memories with my family. My first 'chicks kick ass' heroes were 'Charlies Angels' and Farrah Fawcett is part of my important memory that girls really DO rock...at such a young age. My brother, Andy Kouri, and I grew up listening to Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson. We LOVED Michael Jackson! I lost my brother in 2007. My brother shared the same birthday with Michael Jackson (August 29th) and Andy loved that. Michael Jackson was there throughout my entire life with memories that will always remind me of my brother.
Rest In Peace to all of you. You all pursued what you loved to do...and I am doing the same. Thank you for proving how important it is to 'follow your bliss'...you will be missed.

The King of Reality Shows...

So you're NOT going to believe what I did today. I had this inspired thought jump in my head...poof..."send Ryan Seacrest your blog link since he's the king of reality shows!" So I did. How awesome would it be to have a reality show called "Follow Me to Hollywood" documenting my career pursuit? Pounding the Hollywood pavement, going on auditions, meeting with my agent, the good, the bad and the ugly. Listen I don't know of one person in Hollywood that has done this and quite frankly, I think it would be very inspiring for others who are trying to do the same thing. We have to go it alone, but it's nice to know that we're NOT alone!
Hey, a girl can dream...remember?

Gotta kick booty baby!
I LOVE my Twitter! LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Why? So I can follow EVERYONE ELSE who's in Hollywood, of course! One of the peeps I follow is Khloe Kardashian...mostly because I'm inspired by ethnic girls like me. We're a different species...period. We're NOT blonde hair, blue eyes, stick figures that you typically find in California. Nope, we rock the brown hair, brown eyes and curves...and killer attitude! LOL
Anyway, Khloe tweeted today that she's back in Cali and working out big time again. I, in my inifinite wisdom, tweeted her for her workout regiman...like I'd actually get a full itinerary, right? Just my luck about an hour later, Khloe tweeted workout pic's of her on her blog. I'm thrilled!!! (that's the Universe rockin' again!)
Look, this girl has to get back in her size 4 jeans and I will if it kills me! It just really helps when you know you're not alone. So now I'll take the ideas from her pic's and apply them to my workout. :) Looks like strength training, boxing and yoga. Thanks Khloe...you little ROCK STAR! xoxo, Maggie

Could it be this week?!
Hopefully today is the day that my submissions should be landing on the desks of talent agents (alright maybe tomorrow, but a girl can hope, can't she?!). Please please please...CALL ME! :)
You know it's really important that I DON'T let my doubts and fears get in the way of my dreams...this really helps me stay focused and look past the 'crap' I put myself through sometimes. My latest 'Note from the Universe':
If you can understand, dear Maggie, that the 3 greatest obstacles between you and the life of your wildest dreams are actually imaginary, a product of your mind alone, I do believe we'll blow the wheels clear off this popsicle stand.
"Push-Ups" for everyone, The Universe
Oh Universe, how I love Thee...

And Away They Go!
So I got my headshots today, Friday, and I'm stoked!!! I sent them out to my first seven talent agencies that both Tina Real, my booking agent, and Carlos of Genesis Printing referred me to...and away they go! It cost me $22 to get these sent out...another investment in my career I guess. Look, you've got to WANT it enough to pay for it! Right?!
Cross EVERYTHING you have two of (even if it hurts) that I get contacted by one of the agencies for signing. I'll keep you posted!

Okay, my headshots will be here Monday...WOO-HOO!!!! Then off to all the agents...cross 'em! Once I get signed then off to Hollywood, baby! What?! In my mind it's a done deal...now all I have to do is bring it to fruition. Go ahead...doubt it...I dare ya. :)
My latest 'Note from the Universe':
As you always have, Maggie, you're going to find, yet again and forevermore, that the hard and difficult stuff only ever seemed hard and difficult, before you began it. Bet you feel better now, huh?
Begin it, The Universe

I started this blog yesterday because I really wanted to document my pursuit of my acting career. Let's face it, it may take forever...but it's necessary for me to 'follow my bliss'. With all of the social networking I do - my biz blog, facebook, facebook fan page, 2-online studios, corkin, myspace and twitter...believe me, another blog is the last thing I need! But I wanted something personal and that's why I started it.Well, I receive a 'Note from the Universe' every morning and this is the one I got today...the timing couldn't be better and the message couldn't be more accurate! After all, I based yesterday's blog on my 'journey'.
"The baby steps in the beginning of a journey, Maggie, always seem inadequate compared to the brilliance of the dream that inspired them. This is natural. If the dream wasn't so far 'out there' and dazzling, it wouldn't be worth dreaming! Just don't be led to think that the physical ground you cover with your baby steps is all that they accomplish. Because for every mortal step you take, another cog in a giant wheel behind the curtains of time and space advances, and with it, 10,000 new possibilities.
Better than Star Trek, The Universe"
So now I'm really excited about my journey more than ever...and I'm excited to be able to look back (whether I make it or not) on my path there. xoxo, Maggie

The Journey of my Life...

I have been an actress my entire life! At four years old I wanted to be Ethel Merman (my mom loved old school movies and shows). At five years old I wanted to go to New York and perform on Broadway (I was living in Hollywood at the time). I attended Hollywood Professional School and then moved to La Jolla when I was ten years old. I belonged to Balboa Junior Theater (now San Diego Junior Theater) and especially loved the Improv group I was in... typical Gemini, gift of gab. I performed in school plays all the way through my senior year in high school, while continuing to perform with my Junior Theater group.
When high school ended, off to casting calls I went...one after another, after another. I did stage shows throughout San Diego and Los Angeles. I studied with a fabulous film coach, David Lehman and really honed my skills.
Shortly after, I went to New York (hey, it took a while to reach my goal, but I did it!). I LOVED it in New York!! A year later I found myself married with a brand new son... he became my priority in life. Two years after that I had my beautiful little daughter and she too became my priority. I continued doing small projects but ultimately, when I moved back to San Diego a few years later, I put my career pursuit on the shelf to raise my two gorgeous kids.
My kids are teens now and they are AMAZING people! I'm grateful for my decision when they were younger and don't regret it for a minute. I knew that when they were old enough, I would once again pursue my career...and here I am!
I am coming off of a long hiatus and I've never felt better or more confident. I just completed my headshots with Sandy Spear (photographer) and Susan Duttenhofer (stylist) and sent them off to print. They are definitely my new 'dream team' in San Diego! My booking agent, Tina Real, has suggested some great agents to pursue and that is my next step.
So follow me to Hollywood as I take this journey once again... and let's see how far I get. :) Your support means the world to me. xoxo, Maggie
